Shift differentials, travel nurse contracts, and pay comparisons for nurses.

Nursing pay is more complicated than almost any other profession's. Base rates, shift differentials, overtime at weighted-average rates, stipends, travel contracts with tax-free per diems: your paycheck has more moving parts than most people's entire compensation package. Understanding each part is worth real money, because hospitals count on complexity to keep labor costs down.

Start with the differential, because it is routinely miscalculated. Night and weekend differentials of $4 to $8 an hour add up fast: at $6 an hour over 24 night shifts a month, that is over $1,700 a month before overtime effects. And overtime for tipped and differential workers is not simply 1.5 times base rate. Under FLSA rules it is 1.5 times the weighted average including differentials, which most payroll systems get wrong in the employer's favor. The shift differential calculator uses the correct FLSA math, so compare its number against your pay stub.

Travel nursing adds another layer. Those attractive $3,000-a-week contracts blend taxable hourly pay with tax-free housing and meal stipends, and the tax treatment depends on maintaining a tax home. Before signing, compare the contract against a staff position properly: the 1099 vs W-2 calculator handles the take-home comparison, and the salary-by-metro data shows what staff roles pay in the contract's city, which is your negotiating baseline.

One more for the travel crowd: stipend-heavy pay structures create quarterly estimated tax obligations that surprise first-time travelers every April. Run the quarterly estimator each quarter and set the money aside when the stipend lands, not when the IRS letter does.

Keep your own pay records, always. Screenshot your schedules, save every pay stub, track differentials by shift in a notes app. Payroll errors systematically favor the house, and the nurse with documentation gets paid correctly while everyone else absorbs the shortfall. Two minutes after each shift has recovered real money for people I know.

Common questions

How is nurse overtime calculated with shift differentials?

Under FLSA rules, overtime is 1.5 times your regular rate, and the regular rate must include shift differentials weighted across the week. A $40 base rate with $6 night differential over mixed shifts produces a regular rate above $40, so overtime should exceed $60 an hour. Many payroll systems underpay this. Verify with the differential calculator.

Are travel nurse stipends really tax-free?

Housing and meal stipends can be tax-free only if you maintain a qualifying tax home and the assignment is temporary, generally under a year in one location. If you do not meet the requirements, the stipends are taxable wages. This is the most audited area of travel nursing pay, so understand the rules before signing.

How much do nurses make by city?

Enormously variable. Staff RN pay ranges from under $35 an hour in some Southern metros to over $70 in California markets, and travel contracts add another layer. Check the salary-by-metro data for your specialty and city before any negotiation.
