Free tools for developers

The utilities developers actually reach for: CSS, regex, JSON, and URLs.

Every developer accumulates a folder of bookmarked utilities for the annoying little problems that eat twenty minutes each. Broken JSON from an API, a regex that almost works, fluid type that jumps at breakpoints, UTM parameters pasted inconsistently across a campaign. I have lost count of how many times each of these has bitten me. This page is my bookmark folder, cleaned up and shared.

The CSS clamp generator is the one I use most. Fluid typography with clamp() means setting a minimum size, a preferred viewport-relative size, and a maximum, and getting type that scales smoothly between breakpoints without media query spaghetti. The generator produces the exact formula from your inputs. Paste it, resize the browser, watch it work. It also handles spacing values, which is where fluid design quietly wins biggest.

For the data plumbing: the JSON repair tool fixes the usual suspects in pasted API responses, trailing commas, single quotes, unquoted keys, and the regex builder lets you construct and test patterns with live feedback instead of the traditional write, run, squint, repeat cycle. Neither will change your life. Both will give you back an hour a month, which compounds.

Two non-code utilities round it out. The UTM builder enforces consistent campaign parameters so your analytics stay clean, because utm_source=Newsletter and utm_source=newsletter are two different campaigns in your reports and someone always types it both ways. And the time zone overlap finder settles the eternal distributed-team question of when everyone is actually awake at once.

Bookmark this page for the Friday afternoon emergency. Not because you will need every tool weekly, but because the one you need always arrives at 4:45 PM: the API returns malformed JSON, the regex is due, the campaign links are inconsistent. These utilities exist for exactly those moments. Future you says thanks.

Common questions

How does CSS clamp() work for fluid typography?

clamp(min, preferred, max) sets a fluid value bounded by minimum and maximum sizes. A common pattern is clamp(1rem, 2.5vw, 2rem): the type scales with viewport width but never drops below 1rem or exceeds 2rem. The generator computes the preferred value from your min and max viewport widths.

What breaks JSON most often?

Trailing commas, single quotes instead of double, unquoted object keys, and comments. APIs and config files produce all four regularly. The repair tool fixes the common cases automatically so you can get back to the actual problem.

Why do my UTM parameters show up as separate campaigns?

Inconsistent casing, spacing, or naming. Analytics treats utm_source=Email and utm_source=email as different sources. Pick a convention, lowercase everything, and use the builder so every link follows it.
